Having a tattoo has become the ‘in’ thing with many in today’s society. It shows one as an individual who likes their body and is showing it off with unusual art work. One of the more popular types of these markings is the tribal tattoo design which is gaining more and more recognition.

Countries throughout the world have been using this type of marking throughout their history. It more or less fell out of favor over the years but is now being revived. One very interesting country involved is Japan with its ancient and colorful culture.

As with so many other countries, the Japanese are bringing many subjects into their tattoos that reflect their history. Tribal suns are a reflection of the time that the original tribes worshiped the sun. Following that is a flame, which has the same lineage as the sun.

The majority of their tribal tattoos use only black ink, believing that a person’s body will give all the color needed. However, with the addition of dragons, various flowers, scorpions and other subjects color has been incorporated in many more modern drawings. Regardless of design, they are immediately recognized as being of Japanese origin.

Many older homes in Japan have pictures or drawings of tribes that lived in their nation many years ago. These show various types of tribal tattoos and have grown in popularity over the years. The blending of these markings into the modern design is very much accepted as a symbol of their inheritance.

These markings were used for different clans and beliefs as well as recognizing special achievements of some individuals. Religious beliefs were a very popular subject. Today’s youth, with their difficulty in self-identification, accept this way of stating themselves as individuals. As a result, more and more are having tattoos. In the 1800’s the government used tattoos to identify criminals by ring tattoos on the forearm or placed on the criminal’s forehead for every offense they committed. This is no longer done.

Today, the Japanese people are pretty much abandoning the simplified design and going into more colorful art. The original tribal tattoos are still attractive for many but usually it is incorporated in the overall design. However, anyone wanting the true kind will have a beautiful artistic design done in black ink that is extreme. Understanding Japan’s culture and history is the basis of a true aficionado of this kind of art.
