Tattoo tribals are not new. Their history goes back to the BC period, as has been shown in different archaeological digs. Mummies and other remains have shown this tattooing. It is believed that it not only originally designated certain tribes or ranks, with each having their own special design, but also indicated a special acknowledgement of something done that was superior in their beliefs.
Evidence of tattooing can be found in every country in the world. In the Philippines, especially, it had many different meanings. If a tribesman beheaded an enemy, for example, he was entitled to wear a certain tattoo. The leader of the tribe was also especially adorned in this manner. The men were very proud to show off their markings, especially in any special events or on the field of battle.
History shows that with the original tribes of the country some were found to be covered from head to toe with these markings. Each mark represented a certain accomplishment, which was important in their society. Many of these symbols are being incorporated into the colorful Filipino artistry of the human body today.
There are currently six major tribes in South Cotabato that currently have a tribal festival annually, known as the T’Boli. This festival features the various tribal rituals and many participants show off their body markings. These are proudly worn and make the wearer stand out as different from the others.
Many of the Filipino groups are trying to bring back their original culture by virtue of their tattoos. This marks them as a member of a group and indicates their beliefs while referring to their origin. Many of the current markings have the Philippine flag, sun, stars and the tribal symbol. All have something that relates to the basic traditions of the Filipino people.
The uniqueness of this type of tattoo is that it has the tribal mark somewhere within other symbols. Some parts may indicate the strength of every Filipino while showing other things that were involved in their history. Very seldom are these tattoos duplicated other than the basic tribal symbol.
This method of identification is becoming more and more popular with the people, especially those who wish to revive the old traditions. While once worn exclusively by men, more and more women are embracing this type of art. Wherever it is practiced, the tattoo tribals have a special meaning for the recipient and are proudly worn.
